St. Eunan’s College U13½ Ulster Colleges GAA
For the first time ever in the College’s 106 year old history, the school entered two U13½ Gaelic football teams into the Ulster Colleges competitions. This was due to the demand made by the incoming first years for football, with up to fifty pupils being interested in sporting the black and red, that a second team was entered in the reserve competition (for school’s second teams), the competition being the Nannery Cup.
Woodwork teacher Mr Pauric O’ Donnell of Naomh Columba is in charge of the team and to date they have played two games, losing to favourites for the competition St. Pat’s Academy Dungannon 5-08 to 4-04, who are managed by Tyrone star Ciaran Gourley. The College ran St. Pat’s Maghera all the way before being cruelly beat a point after a College onslaught in the final minutes, with the score ending up 3-09 to 4-05. The boys are hoping to claim victory in their last group game vs St Michael’s Enniskillen next week, and force a play-off for a quarter final place.
The first team have been fairing quite well in the Corn Colmcille competition. They are managed by PE teacher Mr Gary Mc Daid of Glenswilly and is assisted by Irish teacher Mr. Chris Carr of Kilcar. The College began their campaign against Patrician High School Carrickmacross and won 4-13 to 0-06. In their second game they played Rathmore Grammar School, Belfast in Foreglen and won 2-18 to 0-06. Their final group game was a top of the table clash vs St Paul’s High School Bessbrook, South Armagh, who are managed by current Armagh corner back Barry Shannon, who had won their two previous games quite convincingly. The College put in a great performance after being 1-3 to a 0-01 down after 15 minutes, to come out the right side of a high scoring affair 7-11 to 4-09. This sets the team up for their Ulster quarter final next week with the likely opponents being St. Mary’s C.B.S. Belfast.
