HOME - EXTRA CURRICULAR - SKI TRIPS - 2004

Andalo, Italy

Over the new year the ski group from the college went to Andalo, capital of Trento in Northern Italy. Our base for the trip was in Molveno a little village about 4 km from the slopes. On our way to the resort the bus driver had to stop to put snow chains on the coach before continuing up the steep twisting slopes!

Later that night a real dump of fresh snow arrived leaving the slopes in pristine condition for the week in front of us. Out of ski school the group were practicing hard to master the snowplough and parallel and progress was rapid due to the ideal snow conditions. At the end of the first day Michael Boyle wanted to go up a little higher as he thought it was a doddle! No problems on the way down but boy were his legs tired doing the snowplough!! Technique was the the order of the day from then on! A number of the lads were making shapes at a group of girls from Kildare and when they were told that there was a disco on new years eve they thought that they won the lotto!

With Boyler and Greene and Flash podium dancing the tone for the night was set! On the way back from the disco the strets of Molveno echoed out to the sound of the WestLife Tune "Mandy". Greene was a little too elusive for N. Gordon as the latter slipped on ice as they were messing.

With the cloud gone from mid station for the first time the vista of lake Garda streched out before everyone in all its majesty, this was an ideal place for a geography lesson and when the lads heard the group leader bladder on about Moraines et al they all scarpered. All in all a real nice compact ski station but being the capital of the Trento mountain region it was busy but it gave us all a real flavour of Italian life.
