HOME - EXTRA CURRICULAR - SKI TRIPS - 2002 Folgaria, Italy We all waited anxiously for the 16th Feb to come, 34 students were heading to the North of Italy for 7 fun filled days on the slopes. As we made our way to Dublin for the flight we had the three tenors (McDaid, McCloskey and Keeney) to help us relax! As the lads had got tired of singing or they were paid a tenner each they stopped singing on the plane to Milan. The bus journey to the resort was non descript as everyone was shattered. Upon arrival the three feet of snow was a tough obstacle and breathed life into all. The hotel was cosy and the receptionist made us feel welcome - this was the second time for the college in this resort. The next morning we landed on the slopes in our newly fitted ski gear, with some looking stranger than others in our festive hats ie Oisin Gibson!! As this was the first time for many in the thick fluffy stuff you can imagine the good time they had practicing rugby tackles on each other. From the begining the group was seperated into different levels. First off you had those who had skiied before or the "advanced" group as they liked to be called. These guys were taken straight up the mountain and included pro's like Keeney and McCloskey. Next you had the pro wannabes - no names here! These were followed by the intermediates who were okay well at least better than the dodgy skiiers who could run you down in an instant. Conor Keys had an unfortunate fall and cut his knee, this ruled him off the slopes for the week but he made the best of the situation as he checked out all the lovely Italian girls who served him sympathy. By the end of the second day everyone had mastered the snowplough and were all ready for the top of the mountain - or so they thought. By the end of the week everyone was competent on red runs and many were picking up the parallel turns. The first disco in the John Club was a little disappointing but the second more than made up for it, with some great tunes and talent! The last days skiing was amazing with everyone together touring the slopes with a stop for lunch on the slopes in a little mountain refuge. |
