PASTORAL CARE CLASS TUTOR/STUDENT ADVISOR/CHAPLAIN

Each class throughout the school has a Class Tutor and six Prefects are assigned to each 1st Year class group. The tutor is there to guide his/her students. If there are any problems, the tutor is there to help. The tutor will guide the students through the different stages of his career at the college, e.g. how to study, helping with the day to day organisation of the student’s timetable, using leisure time productively. The tutor is there to assist with the
transition from primary to secondary school. The tutor makes a special effort to understand the world of his/her students and to help them cope with their surroundings.
The tutor works in consultation with the Year Heads, Deputy Principal and Principal as well as the school Chaplain. The school stresses the importance of continual informal home/school contact and in this regard the school makes two requests; Parents/guardians would look at the student’s homework journal at least once a week; If coming to the college to meet with any member of staff, to contact the school beforehand and arrange a mutually convenient time.

SPECIAL NEEDS: The college recognises the diverse needs of all its students. Students may have particular educational needs which the school responds to as resources and circumstances allow. The school provides learning support for students with general educational needs. This means withdrawal for a number of classes during the school week where the student is assisted with areas in the curriculum proving difficult or challenging. Resource teaching is also provided by the school. Five teachers (2005/06) provide one to one or small group teaching for students who may be dyslexic have specific learning difficulties, or require English language assistance . Special Needs Assistants are also used and available in the school. Please note that provision of some of the above resources are dependent on the availability of an educational assessment carried out by an authorised
educational psychologist. Resources available in national school do not automatically transfer to secondary school. Therefore, the more information that is made available before a new student commences in the school, the sooner resources can be put in place. Please read the relevant sections of the enrolment form dealing with educational needs and make a point of talking to the principal or deputy principal on enrolment night.

FORMAL HOME/SCHOOL CONTACT Parent/Teacher meetings

Parent teacher meetings are held at the following times:

First Year P/T meetings are held in November

Sixth Year & Third Year P/T meetings are held in December

Fifth, second and fourth year P/T meetings are held in January

In addition to the above, evening meetings for each first year class are held at the end of September to allow Class Tutors, Year Heads, Deputy Principal and Principal to meet on a less formal basis. It is a good ‘ice-breaker’ and channel for communicating on issues relating to the transition from primary to secondary school.
School reports are sent out in January and June.
