The Junior Cert is divided into two groups of subjects:

Core subjects which are:

Religion, Irish, English, Maths, History, Geography, Science, Business Studies,C.S.P.E.,Advisory, Physical Education and Computers.

The Choice subjects are: French, German, Music, Art, Technical Graphics and Material Technology Wood.

The subjects chosen in first year may influence the areas of study that a student will follow in the future. Take time in selecting the subjects which your son will study. The primary teacher can be helpful as he/she is in a good position to know the strengths and weaknesses.

Many of the books used in first year will last for the duration of the Junior Cert course and it is worth keeping this in mind when buying the books and taking care of them over the three years.
